Myra Callaghan, Newry was the first winner of the Recycler of the Month competition for the New Year. A £50 cheque was presented to the winner by the competition sponsor’s ReGen. Myra’s bin was full to bursting with all the correct blue bin materials, which she had washed and squashed, where appropriate. Myra collects all her recycling materials in a container in the kitchen and then takes it out to the recycling bin, which means she doesn’t have to go outas often, in the cold weather. Myra is going to use the cheque to treat herself.
Anyone who uses his or her blue bin correctly is eligible to win. This means that the blue bin is not contaminated, all material is clean, dry and loose, and where appropriate lids are removed and containers are washed and squashed. Officers this month, found that most bins set out had the correct materials inside. However, householders are reminded that no plastic bags or packaging, apart from plastic bottles, should go into the blue bin. Drinks cartons also cannot be placed into the blue recycling bin. If residents would like to recycle their drinks cartons, they can take them to any of the Council’s 7 Amenity Sites. Your bin man will not collect a bin that is contaminated with any of the items above.
