The Mayor of Newry and Mourne District Council has accepted an invitation from the Mayor of the City of Kirovsk in Northern Russia, to visit the City during late February 2010 to discuss both Administrations Twinning Development Plan.

The visit will consider a number of joint projects, student exchange, youth development exchange projects, economic development, health, community safety and education exchange project

Mayor Feehan stated “I am very pleased to accept this kind invitation to visit Kirvosk to discuss the future development of our Twinning Project. Currently we have a very successful student exchange project and we hope to continue this project in the future. Students from Kivrosk have studied at the Southern Regional College and it is hoped to expand this in the future. A number of other students with their teachers from Kirovsk will travel to Newry in March/April 2010 on an exchange project. Also I am pleased to confirm that 6 youth from various community groups in Newry with 3 youth workers will travel to Kirovsk in advance of Easter to participate in the Nord Camp with other youth groups from Russia, Norway and Finland”.

In conclusion Mayor Feehan confirmed that he would report back to the Council after his visit to outline other proposals on the continued development of the Twinning Project in the future.
