The Northern Ireland Press Photographers Association (NIPPA) launched its annual search this week for the best photo journalists in the province.

The BT Press Photographer of the Year competition, which recognises and rewards the outstanding work of Northern Ireland’s press photographers, will culminate in a major awards ceremony set to take place this year at Ten Square, Belfast on Wednesday 24 June.
“Each year we receive more than 500 pictures from press photographers across the country, and year on year the standard of competition entries increases”, says Alan Lewis, NIPPA Chairman. “There is an enormous pool of talent in Northern Ireland and we’re delighted that through this competition, the skill, creativity, commitment and professionalism of local photo journalists can be recognised.”
Official sponsor, BT, has claimed the two most prestigious awards: Photographer of the Year and Provincial Photographer of the Year. “BT is delighted to sponsor NIPPA’s Press Photographer of the Year Awards 2009”, says David Beck, Head of Marketing and Communications at BT. “It presents us with a unique opportunity to support the work of our regional press photographers, with whom we have a lot in common. Communicating, as they also do, through the use of technology and creativity, to achieve the one picture that says it all, really deserves to be encouraged and commended”.
The competition comprises of ten categories: news, politics, business, features, individual study, sports, people, and picture stories. The overall winner awards are: Photographer of the Year and Provincial Photographer of the Year. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winning pictures. For more information on how to submit your entries log on to www.n-ippa.org. Please note only association members can enter. The deadline for entries is 5pm on Friday 5 June 09.
